Name: Túrin Alias: Neithan, the Wronged; Agarwaen son of Úmarth (the Bloodstained, son of Ill-fate); Iarwaeth; Adanedhel, the Elf-Man; Mormegil, the Black Sword; Wildman of the Woods; Turambar, Master of Doom Parentage: son of Húrin Thalion and Morwen Eledhwen, fostered by King Elu Thingol of Doriath and Melian the Maia Marrried to: his sister, Nienor-Níniel Children: none. Probably luckily. Dates: First Age 464 – 499 Notes: Suffers under the curse laid on his family by Morgoth. Slayer of Glaurung the dragon. Why is he irresistible?: Well, maybe irresistible isn't quite the word here. Fascinating might be more appropriate. Poor old Túrin is fated to have nasty things happen to him, and to do nasty things, and whatever he does he cannot escape. Yet at heart he's a good man, he means well, and he is undoubtedly noble. His good qualities are seen by several notable people - Beleg, Elu Thingol's chief marchwarden, and Finduilas of Nargothrond being just two of them. Unfortunately, noticing Túrin's good qualities seems to land those people in hot water. His story is by far my favourite in The Silmarillion, and every time I read it I pity him more than I can say. |
